Womens Health:The Negative Effects of Tobacco on Women

Since the 60s, smoking women has continued to grow: the proportion of smokers rose from 10 to 22% in 40 years on the 15 million smokers in USA. The women smoke more and more and earlier. The first cigarette is usually taken between 14 and 16 years. Cigarette smoke passes from the lungs to the brain within 10 seconds, carrying so much faster than would intravenous injection of illicit drugs. Smoking cigarette send some 4 000 chemicals to the body.

Tobacco and gynecological disorders

Smoking decreases the secretion of estrogen. It may therefore be responsible for menstrual disorders with irregularities and pain. There is also often a change of tone of voice, which becomes hoarse, and an increase of hairs. Menopause occurs 1 to 2 years earlier than average among smokers. Hot flashes are more intense and the risk of osteoporosis is increased. Tobacco also promotes the development of precancerous lesions of the cervix.

Tobacco and skin

Due to a lack of oxygenation of the skin, smokers are more often dull complexion and "clouded". The cellular exchanges have slowed and the waste is not eliminated. The skin loose his radiance and elasticity. Wrinkles appear prematurely, with 10 to 20 years ahead, especially at the lips. Smoking stimulates the production of free radicals that damage the elastin and collagen.

Tobacco and pill

35% of women aged 20 to 44 years who take contraceptive smoke, increasing from 4 to 10 times the risk of cardiovascular problems. Combining a contraceptive with cigarettes is a major health hazard, especially past 35 years. Indeed, nicotine promotes deposition of fat in the blood vessels and damages arteries. The blood thickens and the risk of thrombosis, stroke and cerebral vascular accident (stroke) is accentuated. These evils are aggravated by contraceptives.

Smoking and Pregnancy

Cigarette smoking decreases by 50% female fertility: thickens the cervical mucus, preventing sperm progression, lack of estrogen reduces the quality of the uterine wall and restricts blood flow necessary for the implantation of the egg. Smoking increases by 3 the risk of miscarriage, and by 2 ectopic pregnancies and premature births. There is also stunted fetus that is not well oxygenated. Its weight is generally lower than 200 g at birth. In addition, smokers lactating produce 25% less milk than non-smokers.

Tobacco and weight

Smoking reduce the taste and smell. In addition, nicotine stimulates the nervous system that causes a cut-hunger, slows the storage of fat in adipocytes and artificially increases energy expenditure to 200 calories per day compared to non-smoker. The smokers have a weight lower than they would if they do not smoke (around 4 kg). So when you stop smoking, you just go back to your normal weight. No need to worry! However physical activity is still recommended to stabilize the weight. If you start to gain to much weight, try to eat better by cutting in the fat and salt.

It may be a good idea to consult a dietetist to help stabilize your weight while you stop smoking. Consulting a dietetist is a sure way to establish a healthy and balanced diet. Using dangerous product like laxative and purgative are dangerous and not the solution to long lasting weight loss!

Womens Health: Which Type of Lubricant Gel Should You Use?

Gone are the days when there was only one type of lubricant gel that was available to women for personal use. Whether a woman needed lubrication to treat uncomfortable vaginal dryness or for a little extra lube during sex, there was artificial lubrication and that was that. Today, however, there are so many brands that make so many kinds that are good for so many things that do so many different things that many women find their heads spinning at the thought of trying to find the best lubricant gel for them.

First of all, ladies, it is important to keep in mind that just because a product has a larger price tag or pretty packaging that does not mean that it is the best. Different women with different needs need different products, so the term best here is highly subjective and personal. Youll need to first assess exactly what you need a lubricant gel for. Some contain spermicides, some are water based, others are silicone based. Some contain sugars, some should be avoided by women at all costs. Which ones are which?

The easiest one to start with is the oil based lubricant. Do not use it! Unless you are a man looking to masturbate, stay away! The oil can coat the vaginal walls and the rectum and create painful yeast infections. These are for external use only, and they also are not condom friendly. However, if you are looking for a good skin moisturizer or massage oil, they work great.

Next we have the silicone based lubricant gels. These are very popular because of their silky smooth texture. They can be a little challenging to wash off of the body, but soap and water will do it. This type of lube lasts a long time before it dries up, so you wont have to repeatedly stop to reapply more. Also be mindful of the fact that some silicone products will stain your linens.

Finally we come to the water based lubricant gel, which a majority of women prefer either for the treatment of dryness or for sex. The formulas are gentle and good for sensitive skin, most do not stain bed sheets, they are easy to wash off, and they are safe to use vaginally, anally, with condoms and with those little toys that we love. Do take caution, however, that you do not use a lubricant gel vaginally that contains sugars or glycerin. These ingredients disrupt the natural pH of the vagina, which makes it a ripe breeding ground that welcomes in bacteria and yeast. Just make a little mental note too that although these water based products are cheaper than the silicone and oil ones, they do dry out much faster and must be re applied more often. If you are brand new to the world of lubricant gel, it is recommended that you start out with a water based product and move on to others when you are ready.

Estrogen Therapy's Effect on Heart Disease

The conventional medical wisdom surrounding estrogen has suffered yet another blow. A new study has confirmed the findings of a large 1998 clinical trial, which found this hormone provides no heart-protective benefit to older women with heart disease. Both studies throw a cloud of doubt over the prevailing view among gynecologists that most women should be on long-term estrogen therapy after menopause to prevent heart disease.

The latest study, announced last month at a meeting of cardiologists, showed that estrogen did not slow the build-up of plaque in the coronary arteries of older women with heart disease. Over 300 older women with heart disease had been randomly assigned to take estrogen (Premarin), an estrogen-progestin combination (Prempro) or a placebo. Their coronary arteries were measured at the beginning of the study and again, four years later when the study ended. Doctors found that the hormones made no difference in the health of the arteries or in disease progression.

Similarly, a much larger clinical trial of 2,763 older women with heart disease had already shown that four years of hormone therapy failed to reduce their rate of heart attack or heart disease-related death (JAMA, 8/19/98). The findings came as a shock to many doctors because earlier observational studies indicate that estrogen-takers had a lower rate of heart disease than non-users. But observational studies are, by definition, inconclusive because they compare the rates of heart disease among women who chose to take hormones with those who did not. It has been well established that women who take hormones are in the middle-and upper-income bracket, and there's a lower rate of heart disease among such women irrespective of hormone use.

Only a large trial in which healthy older women are randomly assigned to take hormones or a dummy pill will determine the efficacy of estrogen in preventing heart disease. The Womens Health Initiative is just such a trial, and its results will be published in about five years.

Pregnancy Weight Gain, When Is it Enough?

It isn't the pregnancy most women mind, but the weight gain they experience the nine months during it and then have to endure for a couple months after. It is natural for a pregnant woman to gain weight, as the embryo needs the extra vitamins and minerals to maintain healthy growth.

In years past weight gain was considered detrimental for the pregnant woman, but now it is accepted as a normal part of embryo development. Actually, the huge problem of pregnant women is, how much should they ideally put on weight while they are pregnant.

It is essential to the health of both mother and baby that proper eating and light exercise are priorities. While most pregnancy weight goes to the baby, certain percentages go to the placenta, the breast tissues, water, and other pregnancy fluids.

The average pregnant woman should be prepared to gain approximately 15 lbs. Skinny women who gain 45 or 50 lbs is still considered a good weight during pregnancy.

Ultrasound is one way for a woman to discover that she may be having more than one baby. In such a case, a pregnant mother may gain even more weight. More embryos mean the need for more minerals and vitamins to be divided among them. Womens should take care of womens health when she is pregnant for new born babies.

More than 300 calories per day, pregnant women do not need to eat. Junk foods are not really good for pregnant women. Most expectant mothers gain the most amount of weight later in the pregnancy, with only a little bit of gain seen early in the pregnancy.

If you gain too much weight than its tough for you to lose your weight. In order to not cause your baby some future troubles you should not eat salt while pregnant.

If a woman is overweight while she is pregnant she will most likely have higher blood pressure readings and be at a risk for gestational diabetes along with many other issues. They also increase the chances of having a miscarriage.

With her doctor's approval, the pregnant woman can engage in light exercise, including swimming. Swimming is a great way to burn calories; for further help in proper pregnancy development you can also take short walks or perform some of the exercises that your pediatrician can instruct you on.

Keep in mind that you are now taking care of at least two people now, so it is that much more important to take care of yourself.
